What is an iNum and can I get one?

An iNum is an international phone number, not tied to any particular country, which has 883 as its "non-country" code. We support calls to iNum but we currently do not distribute them (i.e., you cannot get one from us), though we will probably start to distribute iNums soon.

Since iNum is not yet reachable from every phone network in the world, the wonderful people behind iNum have established local access numbers in over 40 countries that can be used to reach iNum from any phone. This effectively makes iNum reachable from 40+ countries for the cost of a local call, from any phone.

The following popular providers route as follows:

  1. Skype. Any Skype user can call iNum numbers with a preceding "+". For example +883510001342262. There is a low per minute charge for Skype users, so the caller must have Skype credit.
  2. Google Talk. Any Google Talk user can call for free (though this can end with little notice). They need to add the number to be called as a contact with an email address in the following format: iNum@inum.net, e.g., 883510001342262@inum.net
  3. Google Voice. Any Google Voice user can call for free by calling the iNum number with a preceding "+", e.g., 883510001342262@inum.net .
  4. Regular phones. Many phone companies allow their subscribers to call iNums (inquire with your provider), but in cases where calls to iNum are not supported, there are local access numbers that anyone can call to and then place the onward free call to the iNum number of choice:

Some phone companies may treat calls to iNum as calls to Satellite numbers (for some strange reason), which means that the cost per minute may be high. Check the price list of the phone company before making calls.
